가끔 아이들에게 "학교에서 가장 좋아하는 과목이 무엇인가요?"라고 질문할 때가 있다. 어떤 학생은 과학이라고 하고, 어떤 학생은 미술이라고 하기도 하는데, 과연 가장 좋아하는 과목이 평화라고 하는 학생이 있을까? 학생들이 세상을 다르게, 그리고 더 평화롭게 상상하는 방법을 배우지 못한다면, 우리는 어떻게 그 세계를 바랄 수 있을까? 우리는 청소년들에게 세계를 만드는 도구를 가르친다. 우리가 청소년들에게 창의성, 배려심, 유대감, 그리고 용기의 도구를 제공하지 않는다면, 그들은 소비, 지배, 분열, 그리고 두려움의 도구를 받게 될 수 밖에 없다. 그러므로 피스빌더들은 스스로에게 "누가 나에게 배우고 있는가, 그리고 나에게서 무엇을 배우고 있는가"를 물어야 한다. 그곳에서 평화세우기가 시작되기 때문이다. A question that is sometimes asked of children is “What is your favorite subject in school?” Some students may say science, others may say art, but how many students respond by saying that their favorite subject is peace? If students are not presented with a way of imagining the world differently, of imagining the world peacefully, then how can we hope for that world to ever come into fruition? The things we teach our youth are the tools we are giving them to build with. Either we offer them tools of creativity, compassion, connection, and bravery, or they will be left with tools of consumption, domination, division, and fear. So, the question every peace builder ought to ask ourself is “who is learning from me, and what are they learning from me?” because that is the place where peace building begins.
