코로나19로 인해 전세계가 많은 어려움을 겪고 있는 것을 뚜렷이 보고 있다. 거의 모든 나라에서 실업률이 폭등했고, 인종차별주의와 국수주의가 심화됐다. 인간 안보와 건강 보호를 주목해야 하는 순간에, 국가안보와 경기 부양에만 신경썼다. 특히 지난 몇 주 동안 바이든 당선자의 취임식 앞서 미국은 폭동과 충돌을 목격했다. 이 상황을 보면 힘이 빠질 만 하다. 다만, 자세히 보면 희망을 찾아낼 수 있다. 현재의 어둠 속에서 많은 의사들, 교사들, 근로자와 여러 다양한 사람들은 사회를 치유하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 이 사람들이 꾸준히 노력하고 절망에 빠지지 않도록 하는 희망은 어디에서 올까? 그것은 바로 사회가 지금 겪는 어려움이란 완전히 깨져버린 (그래서 끝나버린) 상태가 아니라 단순히 아직 끝나지 않은 (그래서 아직 변화의 가능성이 있다는) 상태라는 사실이다. 이 관점으로 보면 우리 사회가 더 바람직한 방향으로 가게 하는 역할이 모두에게 있다. 그렇다면 우리는 지금 우리에서 사회를 조금이라도 더 바람직한 방향으로 이끌기 위해 어떤 역할을 해야할 지 물어야 한다. It’s plain to see that the world has been experiencing many difficulties during the Coronavirus pandemic. Most countries have seen a rise in unemployment, and intensifying racisms and nationalism. In the moment that we ought to have been giving our attention to human security and preserving people’s health, we instead focused only on national security and simulating economies. Particularly over the past few weeks preceding the inauguration of president Joe Biden, the US has seen the eruption of riots and clashes. Through these dark times many doctors, teachers, workers and a variety of other people have been striving to heal their society. What hope do these people have that allows them to continue to strive in such difficulties? This hope comes from the perspective that society's current struggles are not a state of brokenness, but simply an unfinished state. From this perspective, we all have a role to play in bringing about the desired change we want to see in society.
