"특권들은 대개 알아차리기 어렵다. 백인이나 남성의 신체 로 살아가는 동안 나의 의도나 노력과 무관하게 펼쳐지는 일상적이고 자연스럽고 당연하고 정상적인 조건이자 경험이기 때문이다. 불이익을 당하는 상황이 아니기 때문에 깊이 생각해볼 이유가 없다. 분노, 두려움, 당황, 초조함과 같은 감정을 경험하지 않는다. 특권을 가졌다는 신호가 있다면 큰 노력 없이 신뢰를 얻고, 나를 있는 그대로 표현해도 안전하다고 느끼며, 문제가 발생하면 해결할 수 있다는 느낌들이다. 나에게 알맞게 주변 환경이 만들어져 있어 끊임없이 주변을 의식하지 않아도 된다는 점에서 편안한 상태이다. 특권을 알아차리는 확실한 계기는 그 특권이 흔들리는 경험을 할 때이다. 더이상 주류가 아닌 상황이 될 때, 그래서 전과 달리 불편해질 때, 지금까지 누린 특권을 비로소 발견할 수 있다"-김지혜, <선량한 차별주의자> 중 김지혜는 강릉원주대학교 다문화학과에서 소수자, 인권, 차별에 관해 가르치고 연구한다. 이주민, 성소수자, 아동·청소년, 홈리스 등 다양한 소수자 관련 현안에 관심을 가지고 현장과 밀접한 연구를 통해 사회에 구체적인 변화를 만들어낼 수 있는 법·정책적 대안을 제시하려고 노력한다. 우리가 어디에 살든 권력과 자원이 불평등하게 주어지는 곳에서 살아 간다. 몇몇 사람들에게 불평등은 특권이 되지만, 다른 이들에게는 차별로 받아들여진다. 평화를 만드는 사람(피스빌더)으로서 우리는 이러한 질문을 해야한다. '우리 사회에는 어떤 특권이 존재하는가? 어떤 방식으로 주류에서 벗어나 우리들 안에 존재하는 불평등을 밝혀낼 수 있을까? 더 평등한 세상을 만들기 위해 우리의 특권을 어떻게 이용할 수 있을까? “Privilege is usually hard to recognize. This is because it is a daily, natural, normal condition and experience that unfolds while living in a white or male body regardless of my intentions or efforts. There is no reason to think deeply because it is not a disadvantage. I don't experience emotions like anger, fear, embarrassment, and nervousness because of it. If there is a sign that I have privilege, it is the sense that I gain trust without much effort, I feel safe to express myself as I am, and if a problem occurs I will be able to solve it. I'm comfortable in that I don't have to constantly be conscious of the surroundings because the surroundings are properly created for me. The sure way to recognize privilege is to experience it faltering. When you're no longer in the mainstream, and unlike before you’re beginning to feel uncomfortable, you're finally discovering the privilege you've enjoyed up until now."-Kim Ji-hye, <Good-hearted Discriminator> Kim Ji-hye teaches and researchers about minorities, human rights, and discrimination at the Department of Multicultural Studies at Gangneung Wonju University. She is interested in various minority-related issues such as migrants, sexual minorities, children, adolescents, and the homeless. Through her field-based research, Kim tries to present legal and policy alternatives that can create concrete changes in society. Regardless of where we live, we are living in a society in which power and resources are afforded unequally and unfairly. For some, this inequality takes the form of privilege, but for others it comes as discrimination. As peacebuilders we must ask ourselves, what privileges do we have in our society? In what ways can we step out of the mainstream to uncover the inequalities present between us? How can we use our privilege to build a more equal world?
